You're invited to join IAVA, the NYC Veterans Alliance, The Mission Continues, NYU Langone's Military Family Clinic, and our coalition of New York Military Veterans in a show of solidarity and pride at the Heritage of Pride – 2016 NYC Pride March!
Following last week’s attack in Orlando, we believe it more important than ever to show solidarity with our LGBTQ veterans. The worst terrorist attack and hate crime in the U.S. since 2001, the Orlando shooting took the lives of forty-nine strong, amazing LGBTQ Americans—among them, a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, a Specialist in the Army National Guard, and a civilian employee of a Florida college who worked with student veterans. Among the survivors was a Marine Corps veteran who had served in Afghanistan, and his quick actions to open doors and shepherd people to safety saved countless lives that night. Yet they were targeted in this hate attack not for being veterans, but for who they loved, and loved to be with on a fun and festive Saturday night in Orlando.
On Sunday, we have an opportunity to show that hate and terror can’t shake our solidarity and pride in who we are as Americans, as veterans, and as members and supporters of the LGBTQ community. We invite veterans of all eras, family members, and civilians—LGBTQ and straight alike—to show our veteran colors in the nation’s (and the world’s) largest Pride event. Bring American flags, Pride flags, and wear apparel identifying you as a veteran and/or a member of a veteran organization. The more diverse, the more beautiful we are!
WHEN: 2pm-6pm Sunday, June 26, 2016 (this is the latest update!)
WHERE: Meet at 2 PM on 39th St between Park Ave & Madison Ave (access via Park). The parade itself kicks off at noon and goes all the way down 5th Avenue, and is a fun and inspiring afternoon. But because this is so huge (and yes, we don't start staging until 2!) we can’t really say for sure when it will end!
This will be an unforgettable and important event. We hope you can join us!
