Pellettieri Stone Carvers’ Academy runs a 4-month intensive training program for veterans in the ancient traditional methods of stone carving. The purpose of the program is to present the trainees with a sequence of stone shaping challenges starting with the most basic and adding a level of difficulty with each new challenge. In this way, the trainees will become competent within about two months. Once they are at this stage, they will collaborate on designing and carving a substantial project that will be exhibited in public. The master carver will be present at all times to explain, demonstrate, and encourage.
Stone carving is a dying art. Re-energizing this tradition is an important goal of the program. There are many marketable skills that will be taught, and another goal of the program is for participants to leave the program with a portfolio and set of samples to show prospective employers what they are capable of.
Shaping stone by traditional methods is highly therapeutic, and it is also a goal of the program to provide an experience that will support the participants in healing from trauma.
There is no stone experience required. Prospective trainees must have experience using hand tools and working with materials, not to prove they are good at it, but to have realized that they enjoy it and they will be happy spending the day on their feet doing hard work. The ability to concentrate for long periods is also an advantage. It is not a requirement for prospective trainees to have experience in painting or sculpture. They must be ready to attempt to be creative and be willing to come up with original designs when the time comes.
The program will be full-time: 7-8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The four trainees will be paid. For Harlem Veterans only.
It will take place in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
