Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV) seeks Shelter Workers at the Veterans Place homeless shelter in Yaphank, NY.

Shelter Workers are key frontline staff responsible for delivering the essential support and resources that homeless clients need to feel safe and supported so that they can pursue their housing, health, social, family, and economic goals. Shelter Workers are expected to act as day-to-day representatives of the program and to promote the effectiveness of SCUV’s programs whose purposes are “To assist homeless and at-risk veterans to regain their dignity and independence.” 

The responsibilities of the Shelter Worker include direct service and administrative support functions that are essential to ensuring the health and safety of the shelter program and all of its clients. Above all, the worker is expected to maintain professional appearance, modeling positive work ethic and helpful interpersonal relations, while projecting an attitude and demeanor that promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect. The Shelter Worker’s responsibilities are subject to change per the needs of the shelter as guided and directed by the leadership of the program. Seeking organized professionals with excellent interpersonal, computer, and communication skills, committed to serving the homeless veteran population.

Shifts available include: 7am-3pm; 3pm-11pm; 11pm-7am: Weekdays and Weekends available.

Education/Experience: Associates Degree and/or extensive shelter experience

Salary: $16/hr
