On November 12, the New York State Restoration of Honor Act went into full effect and the first seven veterans have been notified about the favorable adjudication of their applications, restoring their access to more than 50 benefits and services offered by New York State.
Of these first cases:
- Three received awards for combat service. One Navy veteran was named Sailor of the Month multiple times and considered for Sailor of the Year before discharge.
- Two received less-than-honorable discharges because of their sexual orientation
- Five proved the actions leading to their discharge were manifestations of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by traumas they experienced on active duty
- Three were victims of military sexual trauma and forced out of the military when trying to report the sexual assaults they suffered
