Hayden5 RISE and the Video Consortium (VC) are offering a gear grant to emerging filmmakers and visual journalists from underrepresented backgrounds. Military veterans are encouraged to apply.
**Application deadline is Monday, July 19th.**
A tremendous barrier to entry in the film industry is the cost of gear. Personal equipment is often a requirement for freelance employment, and renting the gear necessary to do a job can be extremely cost prohibitive. To support equitable employment opportunities for creatives from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, #VCmember production company Hayden5 — through its philanthropy arm, Hayden5 RISE — has teamed up with the Video Consortium to launch the 2021 Gear Grant.
The Hayden5 2021 Gear Grant will give a video camera equipment package with a retail value of approximately $15,000 USD to an emerging filmmaker or visual journalist, from a traditionally underrepresented background in the media industry, who demonstrates skill and the desire to pursue paid, freelance videography opportunities, as well as independent filmmaking. Filmmakers and visual journalists actively working in New York and Los Angeles are especially encouraged to apply.
Every filmmaker should have the right to share and amplify important stories, regardless of the resources they have access to and the circumstances from which they come. The Video Consortium is proud to partner with Hayden5 to facilitate this exciting program, and the VC’s Filmmaker Advisory Council will serve as an independent decision-making body to help select the 2021 filmmaker.
Filmmaker applicants must demonstrate the potential to excel in their craft through nuanced, cinematic, and sensitive storytelling skills. They must be freelancers, and have 2-6 years of industry experience.
