The MTA is seeking an Elevator and Escalator Specialist for its Subways Department. This is a full-time, permanent position with a current minimum salary of $49.41 per hour for a 40-hour week. This is a civil service position. Candidates must pass a civil service exam and be appointed from the resulting list to gain permanent status.
Under general supervision, perform expert-level and complex work involving the diagnosis, troubleshooting, adjustment and repair of electric and hydraulic passenger or freight elevators, escalators, and associated electromechanical equipment in MTA New York City Transit stations, shops, buildings and yards; utilize state-of the-art technology, analytical and diagnostic tools, facilities management and maintenance related software; prepare reports; drive a motor vehicle to transport material, equipment and personnel to and from various worksites; and perform related work.
Examples of typical tasks:
Is selectively assigned and dispatched to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair elevator and escalator equipment problems of the highest technical difficulty, including recurring and intermittent electrical and mechanical malfunctions resulting in repeated failures and call backs.
Works with engineering staff and management to analyze and make recommendations regarding new equipment installations, including evaluating the adaptability of new equipment to various operating conditions. Ensures that the technical and maintenance requirements for new equipment are properly documented and makes recommendations of specialized training for Maintainers and other maintenance personnel on such equipment.
Monitors and analyzes performance of electrical, mechanical and hydraulic elements of elevator and escalators systems with the use of a computer and specialized software.
Interprets complex electrical schematics and technical drawings to facilitate diagnosis and make effective repairs. Programs equipment parameters to ensure safe and reliable operation of elevators, escalators and their components.
Assists management, engineers, and other professional staff with the pilot testing of draft maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, manuals, and inspection schedules for all new equipment. Recommends changes and/or edits to such documents to improve service and reliability.
Conducts thorough hands-on investigations and inquiries into equipment and system failures, and problem installations. Analyzes the effectiveness of preventative maintenance practices and makes recommendations to improve those practices.
May be teamed with other Elevator and Escalator Specialists, to provide specialized technical assistance and guidance to maintenance personnel in the troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of elevators, escalators, and associated equipment. May inspect the work of other maintenance personnel including other Elevator and Escalator Specialists.
As required, may perform any work related to the maintenance and repair of elevators and escalators and associated equipment, including preventative maintenance.
Drives a motor vehicle to transport material, equipment and personnel to and from various work sites.
