The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is seeking Correction Officer Trainees. Starting salary is $49,289. Salary increases to $51,658 after 6 months, and then to $58,634 upon completion of training. These figures are for appointees who work in the five boroughs of New York City or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland or Westchester Counties (includes a $3,577 annual downstate adjustment.)
Correction Officer Trainees are required to participate in, and satisfactorily complete, requirements of a 12-month training program before advancing to Correction Officer. As part of the program, candidates will attend the Correctional Services Training Academy for a minimum 8-week formal training program.
Correction Officers are responsible for the custody and security, as well as for the safety and well-being of incarcerated individuals in state correctional facilities, shock incarceration correctional facilities, work release centers and a drug treatment campus.
Candidates must take a civil service examination.
