VETERANS PLEASE ATTEND!
At the request of concerned veterans represented by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 72, the NYC Veterans Alliance, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and the United Staten Island Veterans Organization, veterans and elected officials will be attending a Town Hall Meeting at Brooklyn VA Hospital, 800 Poly Place, 2nd Floor assembly room beginning at 10am.
The meeting will be hosted by the hospital’s director, Martina A. Parauda.
Veterans are concerned about a number of cuts and service reductions between 2015 and the present, which have forced them to seek treatment elsewhere in many cases. These cuts and reductions include:
--The 2015 “temporary” closure of 25 surgical beds, which have not been restored to date.
--The 2016 closure of the hospital’s Community Based Outpatient Clinic located on Chapel Street in Brooklyn.
--The 2017 attempt to close all remaining surgical and other inpatient beds at the hospital.
--The 2018 ambulance diversion policy, which results in reduction of hospital surgeries.
--The June, 2018 closure of the ENT Clinic due to SUNY Downstate terminating an over 30 year staffing relationship with the hospital as a result of reduced surgeries.
--The June 2018 closure of the Clinical Laboratory, which was reduced to a skeleton staff and renamed the STAT Lab.
The veterans are concerned that ultimately, the Brooklyn VA hospital may close if these closures and reductions in services are not reversed.
A 2006 article updated in 2011 entitled, “VA Secretary Doesn’t Rule Out Closure of Brooklyn Veterans Hospital” has added fuel to the fire that the lucrative Bay Ridge waterfront property may be in the VA’s sights to sell to salivating developers in Brooklyn.
