In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Temple Beth Shalom Reform Jewish Congregation of Arnold, Maryland will host an online film screening of Persona Non Grata: The Story of Chiune Sugihara on Wednesday, January 26, 7pm EST.
Persona Non Grata tells the story of Japanese diplomat, Chiune Sugihara, sometimes called the Schindler of Japan, who defied orders and issued over 2,000 transit visas to Jewish refugees in Kaunas, Lithuania. He is estimated to have saved over 6,000 lives from the Nazis who invaded Lithuania a year later in 1941. Sugihara is the only Japanese person to be awarded the "Righteous Among Nations" title by Yad Vashem on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people, an honorary title given to non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
