True Story is honored to be partnering with the literary organization Words After War for a reading featuring writers whose work takes us into the lives of soldiers and explores different aspects of war and conflict. Acclaimed memoirist and veteran Matt Gallagher, himself a writing instructor with Words After War, will be joined by the award-winning author of Demon Camp, Jen Percy. Together, these writers bear witness on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and consider their repercussions, both personal and political, both at home and abroad, with unflinching dedication to the truth and with voices distinctly their own.
Matt Gallagher is a former US Army captain and the author of the acclaimed Iraq war memoir Kaboom, based on the popular and controversial blog he kept while he was deployed. He holds an MFA in fiction from Columbia and has written for the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Daily Beast, and Boston Review, among others. He lives with his wife in Brooklyn. His debut novel Youngblood is forthcoming in February 2016 from Atria/Simon & Schuster.
Jen Percy is the author of the nonfiction book DEMON CAMP (Scribner) which was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Pick. Winner of a Pushcart Prize, Percy is also the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, an Iowa Arts Fellowship at the University of Iowa’s Nonfiction Writing Program, and a Truman Capote Fellowship at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She has also received a David Relin Prize in Fiction and a William Raney Scholarship in Nonfiction from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. She writes for the New York Times, Harper’s, The Oxford American, and The New Republic. She teaches writing at New York University.
