The NYC Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS) invites you to a Memorial Day flagging ceremony at the Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, May 29, 10am. Guests will be given American flags to place on the graves of the 8,500 veterans resting at the cemetery. Speakers will include DVS Commissioner James Hendon and State Senator Jamaal Bailey. Join them as they honor and give thanks to those who responded to their nation’s call to duty.
The ceremony also marks the placement of a pop-up exhibit for the DVS Veteran Voices Project, a program that collects oral histories of New York City veterans from World War II through the present day. Attendees could follow a barcode to listen to some of the more than 50 stories collected so far. The pop-up exhibit will be on display through summer 2021.
The ceremony is hosted by the NYC DVS, the Woodlawn Cemetery, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. American flags have been donated by the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The Bob Woodruff Foundation has also donated 27,000 flags to be distributed across the five boroughs for placement at veteran gravesites.
