The Dwyer Project invites all to attend the Panel & Audience Discussion of the PBS documentary The Vietnam War, a film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, on September 24, 6-8pm.
Joan Furey, RN, MA (First Lieutenant, U.S. Army): Joan volunteered to serve in Vietnam and was assigned as a staff nurse in the intensive care unit of the 71st Evacuation Hospital near Pleiku 1968-69. Joan then served with the Department of Veterans Affairs for 28 years where she was the founding Director of the VA’s Center for Women Veterans, in Washington, D.C . Joan is featured in the Ken Burns/Lynn Novick documentary: “The Vietnam War.”
Al Vitters, PhD (Colonel, U.S. Army retired): Al is a West Point graduate, class of 1968. He served in Vietnam as a Recon Platoon Leader, Aide-de-Camp and Infantry Company Commander 1969-70. Following retirement from the military, Al became a college professor and is teaching at St. Joseph’s College.
Denis Demers, PhD, LMSW (Spec/5, U.S. Army): Denis served as a Neuropsychiatric Specialist at Walter Reed and Valley Forge Army Hospitals, and in Vietnam with the 95th Evacuation Hospital near Da Nang 1971-72. Denis then pursued a career in social work and, after retirement, helped launch the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project in Suffolk County.
