Served Like a Girl

SXSW Grand Jury Award nominee Served Like a Girl follows female veterans on their quest to take the crown in the 2015 Ms. Veteran America competition in Las Vegas. With evening gown and talent sections, it might seem like a traditional pageant, but it doesn’t take long to see how different this competition truly is. For months before they meet up in Vegas to compete for the crown, our contestants are tasked with raising money and awareness for homeless female veterans, a population that is bigger today than it has ever been. Every woman in the competition has overcome incredible challenges. Some joined the military because they were lost, and some gained a stronger and more stable identity within the military. But many, once they leave, find themselves lost all over again, and at risk of falling apart.
