VeteransPlus Honors the Bob Woodruff Foundation With “Foundations In Support of Heroes (F.I.S.H.) Award”

The Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) an organization that finds and funds innovative programs to help injured veterans, their families and caregivers, thrive long after their return home has been voted as the winner of the 2014 F.I.S.H Award.

VeteransPlus, a 501 (c)(3) financial capability organization serving military members and Veterans, established the annual “Foundations In Support of Heroes” (F.I.S.H) award to recognize organizations that help foster financial literacy among military personnel and Veterans. The F.I.S.H. Award takes its inspiration from the Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime“. This adage reflects the VeteransPlus mission to provide a lifetime of financial wellness.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation was nominated for the annual F.I.S.H award by more than 30,000 veterans, service members and their families who engage VeteransPlus and other non-profit organizations through the Yellow Ribbon Network (YRRN). After the nominations were announced, voters around the world were encouraged to log on to the F.I.S.H Award website (The FISH Award) and vote for one of four nominated foundations. After thousands of votes were collected during the first quarter of 2014, the Bob Woodruff Foundation received more than 40% of the total votes cast.

“The Bob Woodruff Foundation is dedicated to ensuring service members, veterans and their families have successful futures. We are proud to receive the endorsement of thousands in this extraordinary military community, sharing VeteransPlus’ passion to empower veterans and their families for years to come.“ said Anne Marie Dougherty, executive director, Bob Woodruff Foundation.

VeteransPlus Executive Director, John E. Pickens, said, “We at VeteransPlus have a strong commitment to improving financial literacy among the military and Veteran population. We also believe that all forms of support to these Heroes should integrate financial literacy in order to be successful. The Bob Woodruff Foundation has taken a leading role to support injured veterans and we are proud to present the 2014 F.I.S.H award to an organization that has been voted outstanding by the population they serve.“
