A home is more than shelter from the elements or a place to rest for the night. For veterans who find themselves in difficult situations, housing is a critical component toward better days. But it’s just one part of the equation.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) provides emergency and supportive housing, food, health services, job training, and more to ensure that our veterans are provided with an opportunity for success. The organization recently held its annual conference, the largest gathering of community-based service providers working with veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the nation. The conferences serve as a central point for organizations across the country to interact with each other and to learn more about how they can best serve their local communities.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) sponsored a dozen scholarships to allow representatives from our local partners to attend the NCHV annual conference.

Here are some of the reactions from those who attended the event:

  • “A HUGE thank you to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for the scholarship to attend the NCHV Virtual Conference 2021,” Jason Gilbert, CEO of Clear Path for Veterans New England said.
  • “If I could pick the biggest theme out of this year’s virtual conference, it would be that of partnership,” Amy Lyon of Pine Belt Veterans Task Force said. “I’ve been working with homeless veterans for 9 years now and have learned that lesson so many times: that working as a system of agencies is always better and more efficient than one agency serving the veteran/service member alone.”
  • “Thank you and BWF for providing me the opportunity to attend.” Chuck Williams of Lincoln Community Foundation said. “The experience was valuable, and I can’t wait to take the resources I received and apply them to combatting veteran homelessness in Lincoln, Nebraska.”
  • “This conference was packed with great presenters and information on best practices and various programs working to tackle the issue of Veteran Homelessness,” a representative from The Warrior Alliance said. “At the heart of the conference was the notion that collaboration is key to driving the public/private partnerships necessary to drive outcomes and impact.”
  • “The NCHV 2021 Conference was amazing. Each session was jam-packed with information, resources, and real-life stories from the veteran’s perspective,” Melissa Dargis of Northern Virginia Veterans Association said. “I took so many notes during these sessions.”

Several other BWF local partners were in attendance including Veterans Villages of America who found that the conference was well worth their time. A member of Veterans Services of the Carolinas appreciated the networking opportunities at the event and connected with providers to improve the services they offer. Bob from Greater Boston Veterans Collaborative loved getting a chance to hear remarks from Denis McDonough, the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, and learning more about the Department of Defense’s Skillbridge program.
